DIY: Bokeh figures for a DSLR

Hello there! Almost Christmas, for today I'm showing you a DIY on how to customize bokeh lights! I have seen these things going around the Internet for a while now. And I thought it would be fun to show a simple way to create them!

This is what I mean with the bokeh effect. The 'light circles' are turned into hearts! In a few steps I'm showing you on how to make them.

What you will need for this little project: cardboard, a pair of scissors, a sharp knife, a pencil, lights and a camera with the possibility to change the diaphragm (depth).

For this project I used my 50 mm f/1.8 lens. With this lens I could create the bokeh effect the way I wanted. You don't have to use this exact lens, just play around with your camera diaphragm. The lower the number, the bigger the bokeh lights get. For my photo's I used f/1.8 & f/2.0

The first step in making your bokeh tool, is to get your lens. Draw a circle as big as your lens. Like you can see here above ^. Next is to cut out the circle, but leaving two stripes of cardboard on the side.

Next is finding the middle. Here you can draw any shape you want. I made a heart, a star and something what supposed to be a reindeer. The most important is to make the drawing as small as possible. You won't see the cardboard in your picture tho magic...

The next step is to  take your knife and carve the shapes out of the cardboard circle. My knife was not sharp enough, that's why my shapes look so 'fluffy'.

A few DIY's I have seen so far made a cap or something other fancy for the bokeh tool. But I figured this worked the best for me. Fold the stripes a little and if you want your lens to hold it. Tie them together with a cute strap. The strap didn't really work for me. So I just held the cardboard with my hand.

The next thing is to play with your camera settings and you're done! I liked my stars and hearts the best. You can basically create anything. I have seen Christmas trees, hats and loads of other things.

Have fun with it!
See you soon with maybe another DIY?!
